Initially Pam is a bartender at The Outpost, a tavern where astronauts gather, and Ellen is one of a group of women astronaut candidates. An environment of homophobia along with fear about potential communist spies at NASA puts Ellen at risk of being outed, forcing her to choose between prioritizing her career or her relationship with Pam.
